How to Set Up and Use Shortcodes on Your Post

Shortcodes are reusable text snippets that automatically insert dynamic or pre-saved content into your post captions. Instead of typing the same details over and over, you can drop a shortcode like {{contact}} or {{brand}} into your caption, and Nuelink replaces it with the right text when your post goes live.

This guide shows you how to use Nuelink's built-in shortcodes, create your own, and add them to your posts.

Note: To follow this guide, you'll need a Nuelink account with at least one connected social media channel. If you haven't connected your channels yet, follow these steps first.

What Are Shortcodes?

Shortcodes are short, reusable text snippets that replace specific placeholders in your captions with real content. Think of them as shortcuts: you type something simple like {{brand}}, and Nuelink swaps it out for your actual brand name when the post is published.

Nuelink gives you two ways to use them:

  • Preset shortcodes: ready-to-use snippets built into Nuelink (like the current day, month, or platform name).
  • Custom shortcodes: snippets you create yourself, either static (always shows the same text) or dynamic (picks one value at random from a list you set).

Shortcodes save you time, keep your captions consistent, and add variety to recurring posts.

Nuelink comes with a few built-in shortcodes you can drop straight into any caption. The values update automatically based on the post and the channel:

  • {{day}}: the current day the post goes out.
  • {{month}}: the current month the post goes out.
  • {{year}}: the current year the post goes out.
  • {{platform}}:  the social media platform the post is published on.
  • {{brand}}:  your brand name as set in your Nuelink account.
  • {{channel}}: the connected social account name on each platform.

Create a Static Shortcode

A static shortcode always replaces your placeholder with the same text.

  1. Go to the Shortcodes tab in the bottom-left menu, then click More then Create Shortcode.

  1. Select Static Shortcode.

  1. Enter a name for your shortcode. You'll use it later in this format: {{shortcode}}.

  1. Add the word or text you want the shortcode to be replaced with.

  1. Click Create to finish.

Your static shortcode is now ready to use in any post caption.

Create a Dynamic Shortcode

A dynamic shortcode picks one value at random from a list you provide, perfect for adding variety to recurring posts.

  1. Go to the Shortcodes tab in the bottom-left menu, then click More then Create Shortcode.

  1. Select Dynamic Shortcode.

  1. Enter a name for your shortcode.

  1. Add the set of words or phrases you'd like the shortcode to randomly pick from. Press Enter after each one to separate them.

  1. Click Create to confirm.

Your dynamic shortcode is ready. Each time it's used, Nuelink will pick one of your phrases at random.

Add Shortcodes to a Post Caption

You can add any shortcode to a caption directly from the Nuelink Post Editor.

  1. Click the Create Post button to open the Post Editor.

  1. Compose your post, then click the Shortcodes button.

  1. Click Add next to the shortcode you'd like to insert into your caption.

  1. Finish your caption and schedule your post as usual.

You're all set! When your post publishes, Nuelink will automatically replace the shortcode with the correct text.

How Shortcodes Appear on Social Media

Once your post goes live, shortcodes are replaced with their actual values, and your followers see only the final, clean caption, never the placeholder.

FAQs

Can I add shortcodes to follow-up comments?

Yes. The process is the same as adding shortcodes to captions; you'll find the Shortcodes button in the follow-up comments composer.

Is there a character limit for shortcodes?

Yes, the limit is 255 characters per shortcode.

Can I edit a shortcode after creating it?

Yes. Go to the Shortcodes tab, find the shortcode you want to change, and update its name or replacement text. The new value will apply to all future posts that use it.

Do shortcodes work the same way across all social media platforms?

Yes. Shortcodes are replaced before the post is published, so they work consistently across every channel you've connected to Nuelink.

Can I use more than one shortcode in a single caption?

Absolutely. You can combine as many preset and custom shortcodes as you need in the same caption.

Troubleshooting

My shortcode shows up as plain text (e.g., {{brand}}) in the published post.

Double-check the spelling and formatting of the shortcode in your caption. It must be wrapped in double curly braces and match the shortcode name exactly, for example, {{brand}}, not {brand} or {{ brand }}.

My dynamic shortcode keeps showing the same value every time.

Open the Shortcodes tab and make sure you've added more than one phrase to the dynamic shortcode. If only one value exists, that's the only one it can pick.

I can't find the Shortcodes button in the Post Editor.

Make sure you're in the caption section of the Post Editor. If it's still missing, try refreshing the page or logging out and back in.

My {{brand}} shortcode is empty in the published post.

Go to your Nuelink brand settings and confirm that your brand name is filled in. The {{brand}} shortcode pulls its value directly from that field.
